Apple iStore store opening in Sydney

Telstra’s new neighbour, the Apple Store on George Street, Sydney, managed to secure headlines the cast of Big Brother would crawl through green slime in a bikini to achieve… and all this before the store opened its doors to customers at 5pm yesterday.

The iHype reached fever pitch on Wednesday night, iDay eve, when dozens of Apple fans lined up outside the store having unplugged their Segways from the charger, slipped their Sega GameGears into top pocket, and grabbed their iTouch for company as they waited to be one of the first to climb the three floors of the new glass house that is the Apple Store.

Apple iStore opening in SydneyThis author’s heart skipped a beat when led through the glass doors for the first time and into the 215th Apple Store worldwide. For try as we might, few of us are immune to Apple’s charm. I, for one, happily shelled out the full RRP to buy a replacement iPod when my former died just one week out of warranty. I also came very close to succumbing to my housemate’s desire to purchase an iVac (vacuum cleaner) earlier in the year.

Even from the view at the Telstra offices at 400 George Street, the Apple Store is striking. And behind the full glass panels and giant Apple logo that crowns the store are three levels of Apple wizardry.

Up the grand glass staircase to the top floor you’ll find the Genius Bar, which, just like [My]Place at the T[life]™ stores, is a place where customers can learn about the products and ask the tough questions. In my case it was advice on how to sort out the thousands of duplicate songs in the iTunes library.

Of course the Apple Store is also a new neighbour to our first T[life]™ store in Sydney and its launch cements this part of town as the city’s new technology and communications hub.

It also means there are now two iconic stores within 10 metres of each other which is great news for Australian shoppers looking to experience the very latest advances in technology and, perhaps, help improve their lives.

So no doubt the corner of George and King Streets will be a whole lot busier as customers move from one icon store to another. It has us wondering though, who will be the first to welcome who – and will there be apple pie involved?

Oh and before flooding www.nowwearetalking.com.au with questions about Telstra and the 3G iPhone… all we can say is watch this space.

Rename this blog! ...... I-JEALOUS....... If only we could get as much publicity as apple did regarding this building, in hindsight though any publicity is good publicity. This is Apples 219th odd store open, if Telstra can manage to open Tlife stores around australia then maybe we could all learn a thing or two about new and upcoming products . Telstra could learn a thing or two from Apple . Half a million iphones ( old one ) in one weekend, now thats saying something ( note: this is in america ) you can just imagine what is going to happen when iphone 2nd generation hit the stores ... i know ill be changing to whatever carrier can give me the best deal and the phone on the day as well as most people anticipating this arrival between the ages of 10 and 40 :) My eyes will be peeled to this site .. Comeon Telstra lets put the best phone on the best network !

Peter Taylor, don't tell me you've fallen for the hype surrounding Sydney's biggest new contributor to greenhouse gase emissions? As Crikey.com.au today reported, the Sydney Morning Herald has been obsessed with George St's newest corner store, running the following stories: 19 June: "CBD chaos as Apple Store opens", Stephen Hutcheon and Daniel Emerson, SMH 19 June: "Apple says the price is right", Stephen Hutcheon, SMH 19 June: "Pom de tearaway: Brit's dash to be Apple first", Daniel Emerson, SMH 19 June: "iQueue: Apple will open to an international line-up", Stephen Hutcheon, SMH 19 June: "The queue for the Apple Store starts here", Asher Moses, SMH 18 June: "New Apple Store is a glass act", Stephen Hutcheon, SMH 18 June: "Petite model perfects the art of exploiting Apple", Stephen Hutcheon, SMH 9 June: "Shop and awe: Apple's Australian retail debut", Stephen Hutcheon, SMH Jealous of all this free publicity? You betcha!

Sega GameGear? Welcome to 1997! At least, that's when Sega ceased supporting it... (wikipedia) Anyway, Shuan, if you checked out The Australian or itWire you would know that Telstra appears to be getting the 3G iPhone and it should be for sale July 22, but we will see...

I can't believe all the hype surrounding this opening. Even worse were the people who queued for over 30-hours and didn't even buy anything! It would be nice if the Tlife store had more attractive promotion people, the bearded old guy today handing out fortune cookies at lunchtime today looked scary!

LOL! Talk about iEnvy! Interesting how Telstra totally mis-read the whole iPhone phenomenon last year, and still keeps missing the point, if not the boat right now. At least the Apple store is across the road from a Telstra shop, so that when I buy my iPhone next month, I came come across the road to your store to arrange to my churn to another carrier - thank goodness for mobile number portability! Can you be even more out of touch and irrelevant against a worthy competitor???

I had a look at the store on the weekend...nothing special...all the same gear you can purchase at any other Apple stockist. I think the most impressive feature of the store was the glass stairs..not good.....$15M down the drain as far as I'm concerned. There was not even a iPhone in a display case to look at to get people excited about the upcoming product to be launched in Australia. Location is good esp in relation to the Tlife store. I think alot of people will sucked into the hype of the store and make impulse purchases of Apple products and then when they get home, good old buyers remorse will kick in! I think it's good to educate people on the products, but the hype and hysteria will suck some people in.
