In Queensland yesterday, two of Telstra’s fibre-optic cables at Bellbird Park, near Ipswich, were damaged during road works being carried out by a local construction company. These cables carry telephony, internet and mobile traffic to thousands of customers in the area. Normally, an outage like this wouldn't even rate a mention but due to a competitor experiencing a major cable cut in the same state last week, there’s heightened interest in how telcos recover from these incidents.

Telstra's Rachael Falk argues that you used to be able to tell how old a TV show or movie was by the fashion worn by the actors on screen. An overly shoulder-padded suit or big hair quickly gave away a mid ‘80s TV show with much giggling and mirth. Now, it’s not just fashion that necessarily dates your favourite TV show or movie, it’s technology.
