Telstra has claimed top honours at the 2008 Telecom Asia Awards winning the ‘Best Asian Telecom Carrier’ and ‘Best Mobile Carrier’ categories.

On accepting the awards, Telstra’s Executive Director Wireless Mr Mike Wright said:

“These awards are testament to the efforts of our people who are the reason we continue to deliver on our world-leading five-year transformation program. We now rank at or near the top of our global peer group on many key financial performance measures and are the clear market leader in mobiles and broadband in Australia.

“Our $A1.1 billion investment in a national high-speed wireless broadband network and our market-based management initiatives are growing mobile services revenue and average revenue per user at world-leading levels. Later this year, we will raise the bar even higher as we increase peak network downlink speeds on our Telstra G™ wireless broadband network from 14.4 megabits per second to 21 megabits per second,” said Mr Wright.

Joseph Waring, Telecom Asia Group Editor, said:

“These awards are intended to reward outstanding performance in Asian telecommunications. Telstra’s successes are clearly recognition for its rapid rollout and launch of Next G™, and the impact the mobile broadband service has had on the market.”

The annual Telecom Asia Awards are Asia’s largest telecom industry awards and recognise outstanding performance by the region’s telecom service providers and industry executives. The winners are chosen from a shortlist of candidates nominated by Telecom Asia readers and editors. Final selection is made by an independent panel of industry experts based on financial performance, technology, market leadership and corporate governance.

Telstra was also shortlisted in the ‘Best Broadband’ and ‘CEO of the Year’ categories in this year’s Awards. Last year, Telstra won the ‘Best Telco Transformation’ category.
