Telstra offers relief to customers affected by Gaza violence

Helping hand

Telstra will offer a telecommunications assistance package to customers who may be affected by unrest in the Gaza area.

In announcing the relief package today, Telstra Chief Executive Officer, Sol Trujillo, said the assistance would be in the form of free telephone calls from Telstra retail customers’ residential fixed lines (home phones) to the Gaza area.

"Telstra customers in Australia will be able to call free-of-charge from their home phones to check on the wellbeing of immediate family members in the Gaza area,” Mr Trujillo said.

This offer will apply for calls made from 12.00am AEST on Wednesday 7 January 2009, and finish 12.00am AEST on Thursday 15 January 2009. The offer applies to calls with the area code 0011 970 8.

"We appreciate that many of our customers are concerned about the welfare and wellbeing of their families in the region," Mr Trujillo said.

"Our thoughts are with those who have been affected by the unrest and especially people who may have been displaced or lost loved ones."

Telstra asks that customers remain patient and keep calls brief, as the telecommunication networks in the Gaza area are likely to be under stress.

I'm not trying to make this political, but why not also to Israel -they are also being bombed, why only to Gaza?

A step in the right direction which will be greatly appreciated by those who are in extreme pain as a result of this destruction.

Thanks John,
As a Jewish Telstra employee , with family in city of Ber Sheva, which has been bombed recently from Gaza, I would have thought Israel would have also been included in this wonderfull offer. There must have been a good reason for this though.??

I subscribe to what I thought was a topical and informative Telecom News site - 'Telecom TV', this view was turned around this morning with a report (see link) from Martyn Warwick & Tony Poulos who are out of touch with Australian Telecommunications.

http://web20.telecomtv.com/pages/?newsid=44307&id=e9381817-0593-417a-8639-c4c53e2a2a10

Telstra’s great Samaritan act for Australian families with relatives in the Gaza region sends a message to all about not sitting back and watching but do what you can despite what may seem a situation where can make no change. Sol stands behind all decisions made by the company and is a true leader, not concerned with controversy by adamant about making a difference. This leads to the only accurate part of the Telecom TV article “Telstra, is no stranger to controversies, having fomented quite a few in recent years” this is why the organisation is well on the way to being transformed into Telecommunication leaders whilst others “eat our dust”.

Had Telstra chosen to ring each of the customer “worked quietly behind the scenes “ as suggested by Matyn Warwick & Tony Poulos can you imagine the issues? On a personal note there is good potential that Telstra would call a customer only to find they have lost a relative in the attacks so a direct call is the last thing they are going to want to receive. This is not to mention the privacy issues as well as others playing the well worn record complaining of unfair competition (and yes I mean record, they’ve been playing it for years).

Martyn Warwick & Tony Poulos I think your type on News would be better received by the London Mirror readers rather than Telecom TV. In the mean time get ready because I am sure under the leadership of Sol and his many other inspirational leaders there will be plenty more to write about Telstra this year, the real question will be ‘Who can keep up?’.

As a living blog, I would assume someone from Telstra would have something to say on this issue, an apology and amending the policy for calls to Israel also. but still nothing, quite appalling.

John, a good point but why are you singling out Telstra, how many of the many other Telcos in Australia have you approached and have had a response?
