Telstra Chief Technology Officer, Dr Hugh Bradlow

Telstra's Chief Technology Officer, Dr Hugh Bradlow, unveiled Telstra’s forward thinking technology strategy to an international audience at the prestigious CTIA Wireless Event in Las Vegas held from 1-3 April 2008.

Hugh explained how Telstra will satisfy growing customer appetite for high speed mobile and data services, as well as outlining Telstra’s alternative to Fixed Mobile Convergence.

“Telstra’s investment in an integrated, scaleable and resilient network architecture will ensure support for uninterrupted, ultra high speed wireless service as customer demand escalates,” said Hugh. “Our Next G Wireless™ and Next IP™ fast Ethernet networks operate in unison allowing extremely high volumes of data to pass from base station sites to our core network with utmost reliability and stability.

“Quite simply this means we can support more customers, more high-bandwidth services, and be the first to move to the latest generation of 3G technology. In fact, we expect to be the first in the world to launch HSPA+ later this year – a move that will increase peak downlink network speeds on the Next G™ network to 21Mbps,” Hugh explained.

Hugh also explained that Telstra’s integrated network approach delivers a more customer friendly solution than Fixed Mobile Convergence services offered by other carriers.

“Unlike Fixed Mobile Convergence customers, our customers enjoy a seamless, easy to use experience across telephony and data without the need for expensive multi-mode handsets or the uncertainty of different tariff structures. Telstra’s convergence at the network level means customers can enjoy high quality 3G services as customers should – without needing to understand or worry about the underlying technologies,” said Hugh.
