Blog Action Day. 2008 Poverty. Join us on October fifteen

It's Blog Action Day and nowwearetalking have joined World Vision and the international blogging community to support this significant online event - and we want you to part of this action day too.

The theme for this year's Blog Action Day is 'poverty' - and we encourage you to read the special blogs on nowwearetalking - but more importantly we then want you to become involved and comment on the blog, tell us your own story, and tell us what you are doing to  help end poverty.

Our nowwearetalking bloggers have shared their views on a range of issues surrounding poverty - including highlighting the digital divide, how technology is improving farming efficiency, the charity activities being undertaken by Australian corporations, how broadband is being used to create new business opportunities for isolated communities, and simply how people can do their bit to support this worthy cause.

nowwearetalking is proud to part of the global Blog Action Day and to help World Vision with this initiative, we hope you enjoy being part of this worldwide blogging event.

Featured blogs:

That Sinking Feeling
Turlough Guerinby Dr Turlough Guerin - Green Files
"One of the tragedies of climate change is that the people it impacts the most are those least equipped to handle it. Climate change will contribute to global poverty. Acting on this knowledge is the challenge. The impacts are gradual and for many nations, they are out of sight and out of mind."

Blogging the cause
Peter Habib by Peter Habib - Generation Y
"Living in the inner city of Sydney, I must say, I have often found it quite eclectic and eccentric at times. Growing up in Adelaide, I never did experience walking down a street and seeing, en masse, homeless beggars asking for money."

Technology businesses fight poverty
Georgia Lee by Georgia Lee - Taking care of business
"The amount of business and government activity that has been focussed onto the challenge of making poverty history by 2015 is amazing. The biggest change this time is that the web and technology are right at the core of making this all happen."

Sophie vs helping the poverty fight via Facebook
Sophe Marchant by Sophie Marchant - Sophie vs technology
Blogger Sophie Marchant has been a keen "facebooker" for over a year now and in that time has experienced a couple of forms of "Facebook poverty" - from comment deprivation, application shortages to scarce friend lists. On a more serious note, Facebook does have a social conscious presented in the form of "groups". Sophie talks about how she jumps online, sends out a virtual beer to her friends while they simultaneously show support for different causes.

Great phone calls of the 20th Century
Alan Pentlandby Alan Pentland - Next vid
Have you ever had one of those hectic days where you've been waiting for an important business call - and it finally rings just as you were about to steal a few minutes of personal time... Well, blogger Alan Pentland reckons poverty would suck even worse! Watch Alan's latest quirky v-log, which is in support of Blog Action Day 2008 - Poverty.

Progress is indivisible
Dr Hugh Bradlow by Dr Hugh Bradlow - Technology trends
Having lived through the dark days of a totalitarian regime in Apartheid South Africa, blogger Hugh Bradlows knows all to well that access to the best technology does not necessarily mean that progress is achieved. Hugh argues progressive societies need to have social, cultural, legal and political progress as well as technological progress.

How the mobile phone has transformed third world countries
Michael Lewis by Michael Lewis - Telstra gadget guru
Imagine waking up tomorrow without the “creature comforts” we take for granted everyday in Australia… no television, no internet, no phone, no hot shower…and for that matter - no electricity or running water. Blogger Michael Lewis takes a look at how third world countries have benefited from the introduction of mobile telephony.

Living for the moments: Blog Action Day on Poverty
Rhonda Griffin by Rhonda Griffin - Media matters
Blogger Rhonda Griffin believes poverty is both an absolute condition, and a state of mind. Rhonda says "loneliness, regret, grief, isolation are surely all a type of poverty of the soul. More than ever in these times of wildly gyrating markets, predictions of recession or depression, job loss, inflation - even the most sanguine of us can be gripped by fear of poverty. What if I lost my job, my house, my health, my family?"
