Jason van Genderen winner of the Judges' Prize, Dr Phil Burgess and Briony Benjamin The People's Choice winner

This year's winner of the Sydney Film Festival Judges' Prize, Jason van Genderen, may be Australia's answer to Spielberg. Shot on his mobile phone, 'My Town is Broken' tells the heartbreaking story of Jason's hometown of Gosford told through filming the signs in the main street.

As a sponsor of the Sydney Film Festival, Telstra invited filmmakers of all ages to submit a one minute film shot on a mobile phone around the theme “My Town.”

Dr Phil Burgess, GMD of Public Policy & Communications, presented the Judges’ Choice and People’s Choice Awards at the Sydney Film Festival's Closing Gala Night.

Before presenting the prizes to the two lucky winners, Dr Phil said that the Telstra initiative encourages young people, later-life people, and filmmakers of all ages to think more creatively about how to use a mobile handset.

“This Award has helped show Australia and the rest of the world how film can be captured through a variety of devices, including mobile phone cameras,” Dr Phil said.

The People Choice winner, with more than 30 per cent of the vote, was Briony Benjamin for her mobile movie “Mudgeeraba: a Place of Living History” about a place in the Gold Coast hinterland of Queensland.

Jason has won a fantastic prize, including a trip for two to Canada to attend the Toronto International Film Festival, the opportunity to have a meeting with production company Porchlight Films, the opportunity to have a script analysis with Script Central and a one year associate membership of Australian Directors Guild (ADG).
