The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, has announced the Panel of Experts to assess proposals to build the National Broadband Network.

Telstra is pleased the Government has taken this step after three months. We believe what matters most is not the identity of the Government's panel but, rather, the outcomes it delivers and the speed it takes to reach those outcomes. The key will be whether the panel addresses serious issues. The panel needs to rigorously test the bidders and ask whether they have demonstrated financial, engineering, technical capabilities to get the job done. Like Telstra, consumers will be hoping the Government can bring this to a conclusion as soon as possible, because every day it takes to review hypothetical proposals is a day longer that Australians will wait for high-speed fibre broadband.
