Download a mobile wallpaper and help endangered Australian wildlife

Thanks to the support of Telstra, people can help save threatened species like the brush-tailed rock wallaby by downloading a threatened species charity wallpaper to their personal compatible mobile phone. The wallpaper costs $2.95 for Telstra customers* with proceeds of the wallpaper download (less GST) going to WWF-Australia.

"The outlook for the brush-tailed rock wallaby is bleak, with the species listed as vulnerable by the Federal Government," said Natalie Holland, WWF spokesperson.

"The situation for rock wallabies in Australia is extremely worrying. Of the 15 species of rock wallaby in Australia most have disappeared from much of their original range and are now considered threatened," she said.

From 5 September 2008, mobile phone subscribers can simply SMS "WWF" to 13Pond (13 7663) to have a charity wallpaper sent to their mobile phone. Costs will be $2.95 plus standard SMS charges for Telstra customers. Costs may be higher for customers on other networks.

Did you know...

  • Brush-tailed rock wallabies are small, shy marsupials and their elusive nature has resulted in the nickname 'the shadow'.
  • Rock wallabies have been severely impacted since European settlement and are highly endangered as a group. It is estimated that 80 per cent of the total number of brush-tailed rock wallabies in Australia are now found in north-eastern NSW, there have been huge declines in numbers in Victoria and western and southern NSW.
  • Many populations have disappeared from Australia because of land clearing, changed fire regimes, competition for food with introduced herbivores and predation by introduced species. It is becoming increasing difficult for rock wallabies to find homes with loss of habitat an on-going issue.

* Browsing charges may also apply for some customers.
