ACCC to consider 'sub-loop unbundling'
Last Thursday, the ACCC announced that in response to the so-called G9 group of carriers it will hold an enquiry into whether or not it should vary the ULL service description to ensure it encompasses sub-loop unbundling.
Unconditioned Local Loop (ULL), refers to the 'last mile' of copper running from the telephone exchange to your home or business premises. Sub-loop unbundling involves physically cutting this copper “loop”, detaching it from the Telstra network and connecting to another carrier’s network. It carries with it the risk of serious service disruption and a raft of potential technical difficulties.
The G9 proposal also means Australians could soon be locked into a G9 monopoly that gives Australians no choice and no technology upgrades for a full 20 years.
The G9 monopoly depends on pilfering Telstra's network and paying shareholders less than one-quarter of its true worth.
It’s a lot like selling someone a watch and them mugging them to get it back. It wouldn't be allowed to happen in Singapore, so it shouldn't be allowed to happen here.
