Video calling tips and etiquette
This Christmas Australians shattered all records for video calling on Telstra’s Next G™ network.
If you are worried about getting it right, try the following tips.
- Location, location, location
There are some places where a mobile phone call should never go – and this is especially true when making or receiving a video call. Key backdrops to avoid are bathrooms and bedrooms. - Watch the camera angles
Take care to hold the camera level with your face, as no one wants to see up your nose. Don’t be afraid to experiment with camera angles, as you can move from close ups to wider screen shots. - Mind your body language
You might be able to get away with rolling your eyes or stifling a yawn on a regular phone call, but not on a video call where every action is on full display. - Speak clearly and stay still
Making a video call is like presenting your own TV show. Avoid mumbling and unnecessary movement. Also try using a headset if you feel you are too far from the handset to be heard clearly. - Think about lighting and background
A video call is like a photograph – a bright background (such as a window) will turn you into a silhouette, making it difficult for the other party to see you. Also avoid making calls in shadows. - Consider who’s watching
Remember that others may be able to see your video call, so consider where you call from, what you wear and how you wear it. Keep in mind that loud shirts and busy patterns are distracting on video, as are low cut tops, beach attire, sleep wear, or calls from the bathroom.
Now you are ready... Grab your Next G™ handset... lights, camera, action!
