Burn fat, tone up with your mobile phone
Mobiles today can do everything except bake a loaf of bread (they’re working on it) so why not put yours to work and help with your campaign to get fit.
A mobile calorie counter – Whether you're training for a sport or trying to lose weight, keeping track of your workouts and diet is a great way to meet your goals. The success of a food or exercise diary is keeping it up to date and if it’s not with you to count every mouthful then you run the risk of running off the rails. Remove this risk by using the notes function (or even a draft text message) on your mobile phone to jot down what you’ve eaten rather than relying on memory (which is renowned for forgetting the piece of shortbread which at last count was four Weight Watchers points). You can then transfer these notes into the training or food log when back at home or office.
Pump some mobile iron – Les Mills BodyPump converts know very well the benefits of high repetition, low weights, to strengthen and tone. Put your mobile to use and try some barbell curls and lunges. At around 90 grams we can’t promise pumping your mobile will give overnight success but it sure beats a room full of leotards, leg warmers and sweaty individuals.
Vibrate your way to a new bod – Some late night viewing of the TV Shopping Network would have you believe that a vibrating machine (www.youtube.com) will help you move from flab to fabulous in just hour. So why not put the logic to the test and try some isolated toning using the vibrate function on your mobile phone. Simply put your mobile on vibrate, strap it to an area that needs some work using a strip of fabric, and presto. A six pack in minutes? Hey, it’s worth a shot.
A person trainer in the palm of your hand – The latest from the Nokia labs is a unique GPS based sports tracker that runs on popular Nokia handsets like the N95 and uses nearby satellites to record speed, distance and time onto your phone as you pound the pavement.

Eye of the tiger – It will come as no surprise to the army of iPod converts that a recent study found that listening to music boosts your exercise (in fact 24 per cent according to the research). The logic is music prevents exercisers from focusing on how breathless they felt. Most mobile phones now on the market feature some form of MP3 player so you can include your power song. So just plug in your earphones, cue your tunes, and start pounding the pavement. Of course when it comes to the best workout tunes there’s a lot of experts out there. You may (or may not) want to consult Fitnessmagazine.com where the singer Rihanna reveals her favorite workout songs (www.fitnessmagazine.com)- immodestly recommending four of her own for "when you have to pick up the pace on the treadmill”.
Sit and reach – why not extend the length of time your phone rings before it goes to MessageBank to, say, 30 seconds and use this window of time to attempt five sit ups. Every little bit helps.
