The next generation RAZR

Welcome back

I’m excited. In fact, I am very excited.

Why?

Because we are about to release a new Next G™ handset.

So what? I hear you say. Telstra releases new handsets all the time.

What is so special about this one?

Simple.

It’s the next generation RAZR - and for the next three months is exclusive to Telstra. With over 100 million RAZR handsets sold worldwide, the arrival of the latest in the RAZR range has been eagerly anticipated.

The RAZR2 V9 was shown to attendees of the Motorola Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, prior to its official launch this month.

Watch a sneak preview of the RAZR2 V9:

I was promised the event would be HUGE – and true to form, it was.

Melbourne Spring Fashion WeekFor just over an hour we had the features of the V9 demonstrated to us by a team of product specialists. Being in the Great Hall of the Melbourne Town Hall, you can see that they were appropriately attired for the night!

I must admit to being a little cheeky during this part of the evening. When asked if I had ever used a Motorola phone, my response went along the lines of…..”probably every one….”.

After some drinks, finger food and demonstrations, we were welcomed by Andrew Volard, Managing Director of Motorola Mobile Devices South Pacific and Jenny Roche, Telstra Consumer Marketing and Channels Executive Director.

Then it was down to the fashion show.

If you have ever seen Fashion TV on Foxtel (and Foxtel by Mobile), you will understand the rest of the evening. (I have watched it on occasions on my Next G™ handset – purely for business purposes of course!).

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week

(Actual pictures taken with 8x Zoom and auto flash on the V9)

  • Some key features of the RAZR2 V9:
  • 2 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom
  • Video calls
  • Integrated MP3 player
  • Large screen (great to watch Foxtel!)
  • Bluetooth
  • Exclusive to Telstra

Motorola successfully reinvented itself with the RAZR family. From the original RAZR V3 released in 2004, through to the V3 Red, Dolce and Gabbana Gold V3, the V3x and V3xx, the task of doing something better has been mounting.

The V9 is a lot slimmer, has a larger screen, and handles video calls on the front screen.

Touch sensitive music keys are illuminated when playing your favourite track. And Motorola have brought back haptics (haptics are the vibration you feel when you touch a key – a type of “positive reinforcement”).

I was concerned that the 2 megapixel camera was not going to be adequate. The shots I took at the Fashion Show put my mind at ease.

If you are going to use the V9, be prepared to constantly wipe it down. The gloss finish attracts fingerprints.

The V9 will be in stores from 17 September. If you are in the market for a new handset – I’d certainly recommend you short list this one.

I said at the start that Motorola told me it would be huge – here’s the proof!

Until next time, thanks for reading.

Why is technology always linked to skinny attractive women! Why cant there simply be a normal person advertising things? I dont like this phone purely on the advertising/launch - not sold to me its not!

The V9 has had a great start - and the advertising kicked in this week as well. If you have not had a chance to see the ads, or would like a copy of the television ads, please le me know and I will send them to you. You will be pleased to see there does not seem to be one skinny, attractive woman in them :)

Dave, take a look at the Nokia 6120 Classic - available in both Black and White. This, the first Nokia NextG handset, is selling very well. Unfortunately a lot of Nokia product that could run on our NextG network do not support key features that the Company is promoting (HSDPA for example) - hence the reason you have only seen one Nokia NextG phone in the past 12 months. Stay tuned though, we have a couple of new handsets completing their network testing - and should enhance their range in a few weeks.

Will the Nokia 6267, 6500 classic and 6500 slider be HSDPA capable? I am extremely dissappointed with the Nokia 6120 - looks cheap and nasty, case construction looks flimsy. Poor camera, tiny keys. I've tried other brands - all failed within 1st 12 mths. None of my Nokias ever failed. Please put the weights on Nokia to release some decent classy NextG HSDPA capable phones! you would sell heaps of them!

Brad, some good points raised. The next two Nokia handsets that are HSDPA should be through testing within the week. I will hopefully get a review up on here as soon as I get access to the devices. With regards to your 6120 - I will pass your comments back to Nokia. I admit that I too found the keys very small. Hopefully you will find the new Nokia handsets more to your liking.

Scotty The V9 is exclusive to Telstra -so I support your decission not to hold your breath until the others get hold of it. (They have the V8 - similar features but not for our NextG network)
